tupac filler or any wood filler ,using a filling knife if there is a large gap behing the knot plug the hole before filling

I honestly think that's best left to the professionals, however they have wood fillers that you have the ability to stain. Stain a few samples of the wood fillers til you get something that looks similar, and then most DIY home stores have "painting" kits. You can place whorls in the filler portions and nobody will know the difference. Also, you may gouge the filler if need be for authenticity-sake if the surrounding wood isn't in picture perfect shape (or is also in need of a restain).

The tricky part is getting the filler to stain to the perfect color. The DIY folks *may* be able to help with the color matching, but unless they see it IRL you may be hard pressed to find the right color w/out spending a buttload of money.
