Question:

How do I replace the water pump impellar on a 1984 90HP Evinrude VRO outboard motor.?

I know the shift lever has to be disconnected in the forward position and the foot has to be dropped and I think this should be a relatively simple procedure but it,s my first one.Any tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

  2. first loosen and remove the shift rod captivating s***w. it does NOT have to be in forward but may be EASIER to get a wrench on it. once that is removed mark the position of the trim tab(with a marker) and remove tab. under the tab you will find a bolt going up twoards the powerhead remove this. then remove the large bolt in front of trim tab(for easier access you may want to remove the propellor)at this point trim up (or lift on manual motors) part way to allow room to drop the gearcase. then remove the 4 bolts around the gearcase flange. you may have to GENTLY TAP on the gearcase to disengauge the driveshaft splines. carfully pull the gearcase assembly out of the exhaust housing, being careful of the shift shaft. place the unit in a holder or a PADDED vise. clean off the grease from the driveshaft splines and remove the o-ring below the splines if there. clean or blow off any sand or debris from around the waterpump housing. remove the bolts holding the housing to the gearcase.depending on what generation pump assy you have(is it original or replaced with a newer style) lift off the pump housing. it may pull apart as there is a stainless steel liner in the plastic housing. pull up on the impeller(be careful not to loose the drive key/pin) if the impeller is stuck you can very carefully pry up on BOTH sides using 2 bars or large flat screwdrivers. be careful NOT to bend or damage the plate beneath. now you can remove the plate. inspect and clean the housing and hsng components make sure its not warped,cracked or damaged or that the liner is scored. check the water passages for debris(if the impeller has failed or broken pieces of it may be stuck in the housing) next inspect and clean the plate. make sure it is not damaged or warped. check the water intake passages on the gearcase and the spaces below the impeller plate for debris. If the housing and or components(liner and parts) are unusable purchase a waterpump repair kit. they come with all parts to complete the repair including an impeller. reassemble by placing a gasket(if required) under plate then plate onto g case. assemble housing components. place a thin dab of grease inside the liner and with a counterclockwise motion spin the impeller into the housing. using grease or sealer install the impeller pin/key onto the drive shaft. carefully slide the housing and impeller onto the shaft and engauge the pin. replace bolts and tighten evenly. another method is to place the pin and impeller onto the shaft and with a clockwise motion turn the driveshaft as you push the housing down onto the impeller. if you havent replaced the grommet on top of the housing were the water tube connects inspect it for damage if good (or new) lightly grease it to allow easy insertion. using spline grease(or a good quality moly grease)- grease the splines(oring on first if equiped) lightly grease the shift shaft and the rubber grommet it passes thru or you will dislodge it on installation. make sure of the location of the water tube(may have come off with lower unit). make sure the seal around the exhaust extension and the extension are in place. make sure that the shift shaft is faceing forward. carefully insert the unit(place shift shaft and drive shaft inproper places) up into the motor.watch the water tube to see it enters the waterpump housing.you will probably have to rotate the flywheel to line up the splines.CAUTION MAKE SURE IGN IS OFF.place 1 of the flange bolts in the gearcase finger tight. lower the motor and re-install the shift shaft s***w. sometimes its helpful to disconnect the shift cable(makes it easier to line up shiftshaft hole) once you have the shift shaft hooked up install the reamaining bolts around flange and tighten . install the rear two bolts and tighten. reinstall the trim tab using your mark. reinstall prop if removed. check all hardware for tightness. test run motor and look for proper waterflow NEVER RUN WITHOUT WATER NOT EVEN FOR FEW SECONDS AS THE IMPELLER WILL BURN UP FROM FRICTION!!! if you have problems contact me. ps always use ORIGINAL PARTS if you can I know people argue about cheaper ones, bottom line they are not worth the possible failure. if you have a pump failure you will most likely damage your engine or be stranded. always replace impellers approx every 2-3 years depending on use and conditions. the kit will also come with instructions.It is good to use a non-hardening sealer on all gaskets and orings

  3. hi I have changed a few impellors.  Its easy but  you should really get the workshop manual.  Like cylmers or seloc....  I do prefer Seloc books.

    This will take you through the stages step by step... And you can lone the book from your lcal library.

    What yo have to be careful of is that you dont unscrew the gear housing s***w... ( i can remember its real name..)  

    Also when you pull the drive shaft  downwards with the bottom unit  make sure you dont turn it at all.  Also check the O ring on the top of the drive shaft and put a nice amout of marine grease on it... If you dont replace the o ring and it fails  water will go up the splines and rust the drive shaft to the engine.. and it will be almost impossible to remove next time...

    Also .. make sure you reconect the water tube from the water pump. and there are no kinks...  some of these tubes are a brass tube which pushes into a rubber grommet.  make sure it pushes in snug.

    But best advice is get the manual...  second best advise if you are stuck  go to the forums  on WWW.iboats.com
