Question:

How do I report my landlady for failing to recycle without getting on her bad side?

By law my new landlady is required to provide bins for recycling in our building and she does not, even though the city picks up everything recyclable and it could not be simpler to do. I've emailed her to ask her several times what the situation is with recycling in the building and she never got back to me; finally another tenant told me that she just doesn't bother. This tenant said she was actually told to go out to a neighboring building and put her recycling in with their stuff! In this day and age I think this is just ridiculous and I'm kind of pissed about it, but if I complain to the city won't she know it was me since I've been asking about it? I don't want to get on her bad side because we like the apartment but I really feel strongly that this is just criminally lazy and I want it to change. Thanks!

  1. I agree with Chuck. Stay out of it.

  2. Get yourself a bin and use it. Don't depend on her to get one for you.

  3. If she is in fact required by some city ordinance then you should report her to the appropriate agency, most likely you can do this either anonymously or in confidence.  You might want to check and see if providing a recycling bin is really required, however before going further.

  4. Call the city and request recycling containers for the number of people in the building and tell them to deliver them to each resident.

  5. Let her know that if she doesn't have time to get the bins you will call and ask yourself

  6. You could just mind your own business.

  7. Instead of bugging her ask if you can help her get this started.

Call the city or whoever and ask about obtaining the bins and what procedures you will need to follow.

I would bet she just doesn't know how or what to do.

There are a lot of women who think others are supposed to come to their rescue - It still seems to be working after all these years.

  8. You can't stop her from doing as she likes. Is there a law that says she has to recycle?  No?  If not, then it is none of your business.  She may regard recycling as utter nonsense and her reasons for doing so may be fairly good.  Not brilliant, just fairly good.

She does not provide recycling bins?  OK that is a breach of city regulation 16.13(a) (2 (ii) or whatever.

Here's a hint.  The city does not give a two penny d**n whether she recycles, provides bins, or whatever, so long as the majority of people do.  So don't expect the sanitation inspectors any time soon.  They have far more important things to deal with.  Rats, dead animals, substandard buildings, sewer faults, you name it.

After your "several" emails and questions she probably regards you as a fool already and she didn't get to be a landlady by listening to fools.  (I'm not suggesting she is correct.)  You are probably renting on borrowed time.  If you want to stay where you are, shut up.

  9. If you rented from me, and many do, you would be evicted.  there are tones of reasons to evict some one.  Music or TV too loud, visitors at the wrong time of the night, lots of things.  so go for it, but trust me, there's plenty in line waiting for your place.

  10. The city will usually provide a bin for you.  If not, you can get a bin for probably less than $10 and subtract it from your rent with a polite note.  Why does everybody have to be a d**n narc these days?

  11. Call the U N .Al Gore , the green police good god put this person away for life, better yet recycle her.ore get your own bins if you care that much!

  12. call your recycling company and ask them for a bin. They hand them out for free here.

  13. Report her to the recycling police? Obviously this is more important to you than her.

Is there a problem with the space required to keep bins on site? If not, why don't you show some initiative and get the bins yourself?  Many of the trash collectors provide bins for customer use. You should call them first.

  14. She wouldnt "know" it was you, but since you've been asking about it, she'd have a pretty good idea who reported her.

  15. Send the city enforcement an anomymous note.....do it before you go out of town, etc.

  16. are you a chick?  you cant stand up for what you believe in... you cant talk to your landlord face to face and explain how you feel.... you have to resort to complaining about her without saying something to her face.... wow your a coward!

  17. gather your recycleable stuff and take it somewhere dont start something with the landlady unless you want to move
