How do I report taxes from two states if I was a resident of both states throughout the year?

I was a resident of Colorado at the beginning of the year. I got a small amount through W-2 means. Then I was a resident of California at the end of the year, through which I earned 1099-MISC income. Can I use the Colorado 104, or do I need the 104 for non-residents as well?

  1. You will use the Colorado Part-Year Resident/Nonresident form 104PN.  You do not use the form for residents.

You will also file a part-year California return.

You will pay Colorado tax on the W-2 income, and California tax on the net 1099MISC income.

  2. Read about income from two states

  3. You are only a resident of one state at a time.  Assuming that the CO income was all earned while a CO resident and the CA income was all earned while a CA resident, you'll file 2 part-year resident returns, one in CO and one in CA.  These returns will show only the income earned while a resident of the respective states.

If you were a legal resident of one state while working in the other, that will complicate the calculations.  You'll have to show the income earned on both returns, but will then receive a credit from the state where you were resident for the taxes paid in the other state for the income earned while a non-resident.
