Question:

How do I represent the following on my edible animal cell cake project?

I need something to represent:

-Chromosomes

-Nuclear Envelope/Membrane

-Cytoskeleton

I'm using Skittles, Licorice, Gummi Bears, anything like that will work! Thanks for all your help.

  1. Line a  flat glass bowl with cellophane (cell membrane) and fill with orange flavored jelly as cytoskeleton and when at semi-set stage you place your structures. Cut a small orange (nucleus in two and remove content. Fill one halve with a scoop of semi-set jelly.Place licorice strips as chromosomes  and a colorful sweet as nucleolus. use gummy bears as mitochondria, licorice as centriole, small marshmellows as vacuoles.

    Allow to set well. Turn upside down.


  2. chromosomes - you could easily use gummy worms! haha. or the licorice rope that come in really thin spaghetti strands

    cytoskeleton - theres a long straw type candy (since cytoskeleton is tubules) called sour straws I think. sounds good. I wish I had to make this for class, sounds awesome.

    edit - if you want to use the jelly as rina says, I think it's meant for the cell membrane, not cytoskeleton
