How do I reprogram my door opener?

My elderly neighbor recently lost his garage door opener remote. It is a genie one. I replaced it but because it is so old I can't read the frequency number on the transmitter any more (it is from 1978 and he refuses to buy a new system). Does anyone know how to reprogram a genie door opening system from 1978?

  1. They no longer sell the remotes.

    Your best option is to go to a garage door company, overhead door would be best as they manufacture genie so will have all parts in stock, and buy a Code-Dodger receiver.  You hook it up to the old opener and can program the new remotes to it.  It is moderately priced and will fix the problem.


  2. The remote you now have for your neighbor probably won't work with that vintage opener directly.  The new ones have a rolling code to make them harder to break into and the old ones are not compatible with that.  I have seen receivers you mount in the garage and connect to the old opener that the new, more secure remotes will work with.
