We bought a house and can not use the key pad to open close the garage door because the previous owners did not provide us with their code. What can I do to have it cleared so that we can set up our own?

  1. What kind of opener do you have? And if you have the manual your in luck and that answers your question. If you don't google your opener and your should be on the right track.

  2. You need to contact the local  manufacturing company of the security keypad. They should be able to give you a code for it.

  3. What kind of opener is it.  Post and I can give you directions. It is most likely one of these sets.

    Lift master/ chamberlain/ craftsmen

    overhead door/ genie

  4. If you look around there should be a controller box on the wall. I would look near where the key pad is on the inside wall of the garage. It may be only the size of a pack of cigarettes. Look on the side of it and there may be a switch that has two settings up and down and it may say set or program then operate. If you can't tell what it is just switch it to the other position. Punch in the code you want and then switch the switch back. Try the new code. I had one on my last house and that was the way it worked. The switch is small and hard to see look for it carefully. If this doesn't work those key pads are easy to install if you can operate a s***w driver.

When I said punch in a new code use the key pad that you will use to open it. If you can't find it and there are no screws in the box just pull on the cover and see if it will pull off so you can get a better look to locate the switch.

  5. If you cannot find a manual for it you can purchase a new keypad.  They are fairly inexpensive.
