I own a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle, and the entire engine has recently been overhauled. How do I set the speedometer to reflect the current mileage of the engine?

  2. Hi There

Here is a nice straight forward answer from someone who knows.

First you must remove the Speedometer from the dash. If you are unsure of yourself then give it to a local Speedometer repair house to work on it.

Otherwise you must remove the fuel gauage via the 3 screws. then pry the bezel all the way around until you can remove it and the plastice lens. Remove the two screws on the back and Speedometer should now be free to remove from case.

Turn Speedometer over  and notice the Odometer Assembly. There are gears holding every digit in its correct place. Push the Holding gear to the right; this will allow you to rotate the digit to left of that gear freely. Do this with each digit starting from the left until finished.

Reassembly is the reverse steps. The beazel must be rolled onto the case using a heavy large round piece of metal! i have a special tool for all of these things.

    I hope this Helps.

It is not illegal to set back or forward your odometer. What is illegal is if you do it with the intent to defraud someone. That is the law.

  3. You don't, you are committing fraud if you do.
