  1. repaint it if it ever gets damaged

  2. Your entire door needs to be sanded to a smooth finish.

If you can take it off and set it in some sort of container, do the following:

Put enough LIQUID stripper in the container to work with. Start with one gallon but keep a second one in reserve.

Using a fine steel wool, "wash" the door with the stripper. Allow the stripper to drain back into the pan. Do both sides until you see that all of the finish is off of the door.

Let it air dry for a day or two. DO NOT RINSE THE DOOR OFF!!!

Using a courser steel wool, start sanding the door. Gradually work down to the finest S.W. you can find.

When the whole door is sanded, wipe it down with a tack cloth. (Ask the guy at Lowe's when you pick up your supplies.)

Flecto Varathane makes a stain that will match your door. You can either use the stain plus a clear coat or you can use the one that has the clear coat already in it. Either way you will end up with a finish that will protect your door for a very long time.

    Tips:

Always sand in the direction of the wood grain.

It will look better if you can spray the stain on instead of brushing it on.

Once you start stripping, do not change the stripper or use clean stripper to rinse off the dirty stuff. Your color is in the dirty stuff. You want to keep as much of that color going back on as possible.
