More info: My kids were messing around with the sound options & the little speaker icon in the toolbar has disappeared. Media player will not play any song stating that the sound options have been changed.

  1. So you saw your kid click on the toolbar......then click on the sound option........???  Im not really sure what you mean....but one thing is evident..there is no sound.  If you worry about the speaker icon vanishing in the toolbar....right click on the arrow near its(speaker icon) supposed position.......choose "customize notifications".......under customize notifications, choose "past items",click "volume".....click the downward arrow (beside "volume" empty bar).........choose "always show"......click "okay".....click "apply".......click "okay"....now the icon is displayed........right click on the speaker icon......choose "adjust volume properties".....under volume tab...uncheck "mute".......just explore it(volume properties)...and make sure it is set to compatible hardware you have..........sound loss could also be attributed to media player being set wrongfully, incompatible codec(comes from free media players), or driver related issues......

  2. Go to control panel -> Sounds and Audio Device Properties

    Check:

Under Volume tab: Mute is not checked.

Under Volume tab: Place volume icon in the taskbar is checked.

Under Audio tab: Try changing Default device for Sound playback.
