I have a primary home in the state of Florida, but will be working for a few years in NC, (and renting) but want to retain my permanent residency in Florida until my home sells. How do I do that in regards to income taxes and residency rules? Also will I be taxed on my paychecks according to NC taxes or would Florida tax laws still apply? (NC has state income tax- Florida does not- I would like to abide by Fla law if I could)

  1. all you need to do is go to he post office and fill out a change of address form, but instead of checking off permanent, check off temporary.  it should be good for about a year before it reverts back to your old adress.  i belive if you need longer than that you can just do it again. if you have any questions just ask a post office clerk

  2. Won't work - "Bob F" is correct.

  3. If you are doing this to try to avoid paying state tax it will not work.  Whether you are a resident of NC or a visitor, you owe state tax to NC on any money you earned working in NC.  Nice try though.

As far as federal taxes go, it does not matter what state you are in.  But it does matter about what kind of things you can deduct and when.  If you lived in FL and were going to stay there but wanted to work in a job in NC that was expected to last less than 39 weeks, you could call FL your tax home and deduct any travel back to FL on weekends or whenever, as well as accomodations while in NC.  But since the job is "years", you are moving your tax home by IRS rules so those expenses are not deductible.  Since you are moving however, you can deduct moving expenses to NC and then back to FL when you move back.

By the way, if you want to retain FL residency only until you move, why not just keep your house address?
