I have this old vanity stool/bench that has old ugly fabric on it. How do I put new fabric on there without ruining it? What steps do I take to make it beautiful again?

  1. Just a suggestion.  Fabric will stretch and "tourque" so put your fist staple in the front center, stretch fabric and put second staple in the center of the back then in the center of each side.  Work from staple to corner and so on.  This keeps your fabric square which is really important if you are using a patterned fabric.   I do this all the time so feel free to contact me with any other questions.  GOod luck

  2. Measure the length and width of the stool to find out how much fabric you need. For example if it's 12" x 20" and 3" thick  then a little over half a yard of fabric would work. Add the depth to the length and the width. 12" plus 3 plus 3=18"--20" plus 3 plus 3=26". Upholstery fabric comes in 45"-60" widths. Just take your measurements to the fabric store and they can help you. After you get it then cut it about 2" larger and lay it out on a flat surface. Place the bench on top and center it. Staple the center of one side and then pull the center of the opposite side.  Pull and staple the other 2 sides in the center. keep pulling and stapleing until it is tight and pull the material in the corners tight  and staple.Do all the stapleing underneath the bench.

  3. turn it upside down & remove the screws to release the top from the bench. use screwdriver & pliers to remove the staples holding the ugly fabric. use the ugly fabric as a guide for cutting the new fabric & staple it on with a staple gun. you may need a hammer to get the staples all the way into the wood. place it back onto the bench & replace the screws.

  4. As above, or if you can cut the fabric without a pattern (not hard), just go over the old fabric with new, staple and you are done.
