How do I rip dvds onto my computer

I can see how to rip/import cds (using iTunes), but I don't know how to do that with dvds or even what program to use.

I have a Gateway. Windows Vista.

  1. Ripping DVDs is a bit more complicated than CDs, for both technical and legal reasons.

    You need to use a program like DVDFab http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm to copy the DVD to your hard drive.

    That will (might) work on your computer, but you might have to convert it from the DVD format (MPEG2) to another format to use it anywhere else (like an iPod).  You'll have to lookup convert MPEG2 to iPod or ask another question about that because it's too in depth for this answer.

    Now for the legal issues.  In the US although you are legally entitled to make a backup copy of any movie you have, ripping a DVD to your computer is illegal.  It's a violation of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) because you are "circumventing" copy protection technology.  Last I knew Canada didn't have a law like this but they were thinking about enacting one.  I believe it is legal in Italy (not sure).  You'll have to research the specific laws for your area.
