  1. Place on kitchen towel in dark drawer. Regards. UK

  2. Green pears can be put in a paper bag to ripen quickly but check them daily to make sure they don't get too ripe. Pears can also be left in a bowl on a countertop and they'll ripen a little slower than in a bag but they're handier for a visual check.

  3. When you say “ripen green pears” you don’t mean for them to get red, do you? Although there ARE red pears, a great many of them are green and will stay green even when ripe.

Some cultivars (types) are meant to be eaten soft and juicy and some are meant to be eaten while crispy.

I use three techniques to ripen fruit.

I lay them on a cotton napkin in a flattish bowl or plate and check them daily – to see if they have reached the softness my palate craves.

The second technique is to put them on the window sill and check daily for preferred softness.

Sometimes I will put them in a closed brown cardboard box (for some odd reason I think it works better than a paper bag but that might be my vivid imagination) and check them daily for ripeness.

I also try to avoid them touching each other and if I see any spots starting to go bad – that one gets eaten first (bad part removed).

If I can’t prevent them from touching each other, I wrap them in newspaper – preventing them from touching each other.

Apples, I wrap in newspaper and keep them in the fridge until I am ready to eat them.
