How do I ripening mangos?

I recently got a case of mangos to cut up and freeze for smoothies this winter but they where not quite ripe so I separated them and left them on the counter but they stayed hard and rotted and I had to throw them all out. What did I do wrong

I haven't a clue what you did wrong to be honest but i believe you can ripen fruit by putting in a bowl with bananas, or try putting in a brown paper bag for a couple of days, somewhere warm but not too hot.
