Question:

How do I safely recycle a steel aerosol can?

The can has a recycle symbol with the word "steel" in the middle. It had shaving cream in it, but there's no more cream coming out now. I don't want to take an aerosol can to a recycle bin because I worry that there's more pressure left inside.

  1. i saw on the internet how to make a solar heater out of soda pop cans. i am not sure on the steel cans though. maybe something to look into. i have thought about making one myself to heat water.

  2. Just bury it somewhere.  Time will take care of it.

  3. over 35% of the earth is made of iron, scrap iron is priced $350-400/ ton (less than a penny/LB) and it doesn't take much of energy to refine iron

in a humid weather it shortly turns to iron oxide which is a large percentage of top soil

so with all these details i don't think that anyone might have any interest recycling a small steel can

  4. If you worry that there is pressure simply press the cans button to release the pressure. If it is all steel you can recycle it in your cities recycle program. You may have to take a hammer to knock of the plastic spay cap, that should not be attached to the metal. (Remember any aerosol in the can WILL BE released one way or the other, either instantly or a slow drain.)

  5. hmmm i have the same concern.... i havent thrown away any of mine yet hah

  6. Have you tried reading the can?

  7. If you live in a city you probably have a household hazardous waste centre you can google your city name and household hazardous waste, if you have one you should be able to find it that way.  I have one in my area and they recycle lots of things that the regular recycling centre could not because they are dangerous things.
