Question:

How do I save gas millage in a V6?

I have a 2001 Toyota Camry V6 and it gets about 20 miles to the gallon. I'm trying to get it to at least 25 if not 30. Any advice is good advice, either while driving or maintenance that might be done to increase millage. I have 88,000 miles on it.

  1. Any car or truck uses only about 30% of the fuel put in the engine. (Toyota and Honda do better) most of the fuel is unburnt and is the reason for catalytic converters. More and more people are adding a hydrogen generator and boosting their MPG up as much as 25% or more. There are a lot of devices out there. The best site is hhowater4gas.com as you can choose which one you want. The principle is simple and known for a century or more. Basically through electrolysis hydrogen is separated from the oxygen which is combustible So you supplement the gas with hydrogen. So you save a good deal of money. It's why it's becoming so popular. It was on ABC News last week and national radio - Coast to Coast am

  2. replace the spark plugs and wires first.  Install a free-flow intake system and low restriction exhaust system... These increase efficiency and performance.....  just keep your foot out of it.  :)

Remove everything from the car and the trunk that adds unnecessary weight....

    i. e. trunk junk...

    Keep it washed...

keep the tire pressure at recommended levels at all times.

Drive gently....   as soon as you realize a stop is coming take your foot off the gas.   Ease into the gas... dont accelerate hard to get to highway speeds if no one is behind you... take it slow...

You done HAVE to drive the maximum speed limit... drive five miles under it.   It wont cost that much time but you'll notice  better fuel economy.

    good luck....

  4. There are few thing you can do to save (or maximize) gas MPG. First get a tune-up.

    (1) spark plugs

    (2) spark plug wires

    (3) distributors, coil, rotors (if you have them).

    (4) new air filter

    (5) PCV

    (6) correct tire pressure

    (7) clear the trunk of useless heavy items

    (8) spray clean MAF sensor.

There are 4 most important maintenance items in your engine

    (1) engine oil (3k - 5K miles)

    (2) tranny oil (30K miles)

    (3) coolant (3 years)

    (4) timing belt (60K miles)

Just keep those maintenance and your engine and tranny will be problem free.

Forget all those "SAVE GAS" scams.  This was on NBC morning TV show.   The difference is as much as 38% (their claim).  There are very simple rules to save gas:

    (1) drive slow - not too much past 55

    (2) accelerate slowly

    (3) don't brake unnecessarily

    (4) use cruise control - whenever it is safe to do so.

Don't coast - it is NOT safe (to coast in Nuetral) and it does NOT save gas.  It only saves gas, if you are planning to slow down (exiting, tolls, traffic).  Coasting then accelerating again is LESS efficient than just cruising.

The above really works. Using those simple rules I was able to drive from Boston to NYC (210.5 miles) on just 5.112 gallon (94 Civic).  That's 41 MPG (94 Civic 187K miles).  Actually I was speeding at 72 MPH so I could do even better at 55.

WOW !!  Good maintenance pays off.

    For best MPG:

HWY speed - AC on and window up.

STREET speed - AC off and window down.

The BEST - AC OFF and window UP.

    As simple as that.

    Good Luck...

  5. Maintaining the correct tire pressure will be a great help.  Use a moderate highway speed within 5% of the speed limit.  Getting 25 to 30 may be tough considering that would be a 25 to 33% increase in fuel effiecency.  Start out with the tow to see what that does for you.  Good Luck!!

  6. Tune it up and drive the speed limit.

  7. trade it in for a smaller engine

  8. If you haven't kept up with the maintenance, I'd start with a tune-up, oil change, new air filter, and new oxygen sensor(s).

Keep your tires properly inflated, use the a/c sparingly, and don't drive like a madman.
