I want to save on car insurance.....what factors can lower your rate? I need to know things such as an alarm, and kept in the garage, but what other factors can help me getting a low rate?

  1. I found a low rate by joining AAA.  It cost me an extra $50 per year membership fee but the actual rate itself was so much lower that it was worth it.

  2. Ive apparently been programmed to say "by switching to geico"

  3. Alarms help but not much it only takes premium off of the "other than collision" premium, nothing else.  Raising your comprehensive & collision deductibles helps.  Also, if the car is older, you do not have a loan & you can afford to lose it in an at fault loss, you can delete comprehensive & collision.

Probably the biggest savings to your auto is if you have your auto & homeowners or tenants policy with the same company.  Many companies offer an account credit if you have both of these policies with them.  If you rent & do not have a tenants, many times the savings on the auto policy will pay for the tenants policy (many tenants policies only are $150 per year so if you are paying $1500 in auto insurance & the account credit is 10%, you will have 2 policies for the same price as one).  If you own your home you probably already have a homeowners policy so get your auto quotes with your homeowners carrier (if available - some companies only write homes) or get your home quoted with  your auto carrier (if available).  If neither writes both policies, start shopping around for the best deal.  Call a good local independent agent & they should be able to help you.

  4. You may want to try a site that compares multiple companies at once to get you the best price. I'm paying less than  after I did.

    Take care.

  5. What kind of car do you have and how many miles ?

You can probably lower your rate the easiest by raising your deductibles especially if you can live with some minor dings and dents that don't get repaired.
