How do I secure my pc so a password is needed to use it?

You can also allow others to use your PC safely by activating the guest account. It is/can be restricted to games and internet while not allowing downloads and access to important files. Nor will it allow changes to your PC.

start > control panel > Users & Accounts > Click on  your account > Create a password

Restart your PC.  When it is starting, hit F2 to get into the BIOS/CMOS etup.  Setup a passowrd in there.

Noone will be able to start you machine without.

Keep in mind that almost any password/lock protect has ways around them if the theif has time.
