How do I secure the network between my laptop and desktop?

I have a wireless netgear WG111v2 usb adapter and a belkin router. I use windows Xp on the desktop and Vista on my laptop. Anyway I just need to figure out how to secure the network. I'm not really very smart when it comes to computers so the manual didn't help me much. Can someone help?

You might have to open the admin site on your router to add the Mac address to have wireless connection.
