Question:

How do I secure this mirror?

I have a 4x6 foot mirror that I need to somehow secure to the wall lengthwise. I figured I could just lean it, but that seems dangerous. It has no frame, so I am puzzled as how to mount this with the least amount of screws as possible while still being secure.

  1. Although you did not state the thickness of the mirror you can use a couple of lengths of Cap molding also known as plycap sold at all home centers.  This molding when cut to the 4' width and turned upside and mounted on the wall can support the bottom of the mirror and a second 4' piece can be turned right side up and the molding will capture the top of the mirror and keep it from falling out.   You will have to secure the molding to the wall but a 4' length should provide you with several areas to run a s***w through and hit a stud further securing the mirror.

  2. You should get a mirror hanging kit from your home renovation store.  Compare to make sure it will work with your mirror.

Typically the hangers have two components, a base you use at the bottom to 'hang' the mirror on and hold the weight.  These need to be anchored in a stud so they will not come out of the drywall.  The top component will have a sliding mechanism so that once the mirror is against the wall, these 'catch' the top of the mirror so that it will not fall.

Glue and other adhesives should only be used to avoid vibration and NOT as a main fastener.

    Good luck!!

  3. You can stick it using mirror adhesive do not use silicon as this will damage the coating. You can get your adhesive from a glass cutter/supplier sounds like you could need two tubes together with a skeleton gun or you could try screwfix on line.

follow the instructions for the adhesive but you Willl need support on the bottom edge just to take the downwards weight. The mirror wil need to be supported whilst the adhesive sets I leave it overnight. The adhesive is quite strong so you will need to be careful not to press too hard in one spot and distort the mirror although if your mirror is 6mm it shouldn't be too much of a problem Good Luck and don't forget to level it up. PS this method is permanent and you will need to break the mirror to remove it in the future.

  4. Some DIY places sell mirrow backets which can be front or rear fitting. Sort of U shaped. If mirror heavy use long screws.

  5. Liam is right.  A mirror that big is going to be heavy, so go with long screws, and put them into the studs.  Get or borrow a stud finder, an electronic gizmo that senses the studs.  Tapping the wall CAN work, but only if you are lucky.

You should do three supports on the bottom, but only need two up top, as they are doing very little "work".
