  1. An annoying thing about iTunes is that unless you buy audiobooks from the iTunes store, it will consider MP3 audiobooks as regular music files.

    Here's how to change that:

    1) In the iTunes Menu, go to Edit>>Preferences>>Advanced>>Importing

    2) Make sure "Import Using" is set as "AAC Encoder."

    3) Change "Setting to "Custom" and set the following options:

    - Bit Rate: 64kbs (this is a nice average setting for most audiobooks)

    - Channels: Stereo (fixes an issue with homemade mono files on some iPods)

    - Check “Optimize for Voice“

    4) Add the audiobook files to your library.  Select (highlight) the files, right-click, and select "Convert Selection to AAC".

    5) Once the files are converted, delete the original files from your library.  You can also remove the newly created files from your library, but when you are asked, be sure to select “Keep Files“, so they are not deleted off your hard drive.

    6) The files are created by default under "My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music”.  Open the folder.

    7) You will notice that the new files have the .m4a extension.  Rename them to .m4b

    8) Import the files again.

    9) That's it!  Your audiobook will show up under the “Audiobooks” menu on your iPod, your playback position will be remembered, and they will not get played during song shuffles.
