How do I set the shutter speed on Nikon D40 ?

my girlfriend just purchased a slr nikon d40,and she's having trouble fixing the shutter speed.excuse my ignorance, i've been trying to find out in the manual of the camera, but no obvious answers.i'd appreciate if someone could help me

Put the camera in shutter priority mode, manual mode, or program mode, turn the command dial.
