How do I set up a clothesline without cementing the post into the ground?

I had it anchored into the house but it pulled out of the brick wall. How do I set it up without doing this again? Will a four by four eventually pull over from the weight or is there someway of preventing this?

  1. If you had trees, I'm sure you wouldn't be asking this question. Get two pieces of pipe about 30" long. With a slight lean away from where the clothes will be, drive them into the ground so about 12" is left sticking out of the ground. Find another pipe that just fits over the ones you put into the ground. (If you have loose soil use longer pipe and go deeper into the ground.) The pipes that your slide over the ones you put into the ground should be about 6' tall, depending on your height. Now you have two poles to string a line. WARNING! make sure you don't drive your metal pipes into an underground electrical line!! be careful.

  2. If you are thinking of using 4 x 4 poles, you must be hanging  heavy garments, carpets and curtains.  The pole must be at least 1/3 (of total length) deep in the ground, in this case.  Pack the hole first with small gravel and then cover with earth. Dont forget to treat the portion of the pole to be buried with anti-termite solution.  Good luck.

  3. get 2 hooks put put them on trees and tie the clothes line tight on the hooks and you get a clothes line :)
