Question:

How do I set up a network between two locations?

I need to set up a way for PC's networked in our building on this side of town to talk to those in the network in our other building. Ideally, I would like to set up Shared drives (the last place I worked had servers and what not - "//servername/share$" and utilized VPN's. I do not know if this is all necessary or if there is an easier way. Any help, just a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

  2. The LAN-to-LAN VPN was designed for just what you are trying to do.  This is your best bet for cost and security.  Otherwise you'll need a point-to-point leased line which can get real pricey.

So get a good Internet connection at both sites and setup an applianced based VPN solution.

  3. Apart from a VPN your only option seems to be wireless.  However, I think VPN is more cost effective.

    enjoy your computer.

  4. You're going to have to learn something, either lan-to-lan VPN or how to set up a long distance wireless link (the record for solid connection is over 37 miles, so it can be done - and not for that much money).  But you're not going to do it by buying a box and plugging it in or buying a program and installing it - not without learning how to set up and administer the method you choose.  (Going to school to learn how to do it is like a mini-vacation, you're worth more to the company and you're worth more on the market when you want to change jobs.)

  5. set up a wireless network.

  6. you need to establish site-to-site VPN,

with both sides connected to Internet, you need a vpn server at both side, this can be windows 2003 machine , linux machine, or ... you ADSL router itself,  even some low end router will support site-to-site VPN.

there is also some open source software that work as VPN server as well.

on windows 2003 VPN is configured at "routing and remote access service" ,check the links below for more details

if you go to HW VPN, you have to check your router manual.

which solution is suitable for you depends on how many PC you have at both sides and the expected traffic.

one last thing, IPSEC VPN is more secure than L2TP but some how more difficult to implement.
