skype used to be king but the magic jack has taken the crown now it works so well call anywhere in the usa or canada for a flat $20 a YEAR

There are many to choose from.  It is mostly a matter of personal preference.

Generally speaking, all you need to get started is a headset with microphone and a high-speed Internet connection.  Then, install the VoIP software of your choice.

I have been using Skype on my PC for over 3 years.  The latest version 3.8 has excellent voice quality and is more reliable than older versions.  For $2.95/month, you can call to anywhere in USA/Canada Unlimited.  Of course all calls between all Skype users is free.

Gizmo5 is another Skype competitor.  Their rates are very similar to Skype.  I have used Gizmo5, but like Skype better.
