Question:

How do I set up internet without a phone line?

I'm moving from a house with wireless internet to one without. I won't have a TV, nor will I have a phone line, since I use my cell phone. I have a Macbook, so I have an Airport card.

I am a student, and would like to set up internet in my new location on as low a budget as possible.

I've done some reading, and it seems like I need a wireless router. I'm also confused about ISPs. Do I need to pay for anything like that besides the router to make internet work? I'm using Camino to browse the web, if that makes any difference. I'd really like a clear explanation of what I need and what each thing does, because I'm pretty confused.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Carly

  1. There appear to be two kinds of wireless Internets:  Those that use a wireless router (meaning the connections between the computers to the router can be wireless) to access a traditional wire line (cable or DSL, usually), and those that use cellphone communications to be truly wireless.  I don't know if you can even use a router (wireless or not) on those lines.

In general, a router is a box that sits between the computer(s), wired and/or wireless, and a modem connected to the Internet and permits several computers to use the Internet simultaneously.  (Routers are sometimes built into the modem.)

    Hope that helps.
