How do I set up my PS3 with my home theatre system?

I have recently bought a Sony package which comes with a SON-DAVDZ630 (home theatre system) and a SON-KDL40s3000u (LCD TV) which I want to set up with my PS3. I have no idea how to set this all up, tried loads of websites and am more confused? The home theatre system is also a DVD player and has 1 HDMI port, as does the PS3. If I link them through HDMI i cant connect either to the TV? I have read about optical out? but then they talk about switching or decoding? Also will the sound be a good quality as other websites say it downgrades the sound? Help will be much appreciated.

  1. Run an HDMI cable from your TV to your receiver, then run your a second cable from your receiver to the PS3. I know it can be confusing when trying to research all the stuff, but it's really quite simple.

Alternatively, since your receiver only has one HDMI port, run component cables from the PS3 to the TV, then run an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver, that will get you your 5.1 surround sound. That's probably the most simple way for you to hook it up. An optical cable will get you true 5.1 surround sound, there's no loss in quality. Your component cables won't be quite as good as an HDMI cable, but the picture quality difference is minimal, and probably not even noticeable to the common user.

If you're using the second option, I suggest getting your optical cable (or any cables in the future for that matter) from monoprice.com. Great prices and fast shipping. Here's some optical cables for you.

  2. your tv should have at least two HDMI INPUTS. Run one HDMI cable from the PS3, and one HDMI cable from the DVD into those INPUTS on the back or side of TV.

for sound, on the back of your TV should be two red and white outputs that say AUDIO OUT, run a red and white cable from the back of the tv into the receiver. on the back of the receiver you will see CABLE/SAT, or TV, or DVD audio inputs, run the red and white cables into one of those inputs, and select the input of the front of the receiver...i.e, dvd tv, or sat....

thats probably the most basic way of setting up a HTS, without optical cables
