  1. What you must buy is a wireless router with built-in Ethernet ports.

    Something like this. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...

Then plug your modem's output into the input of the router. Plug the Desktop into one of the 4 wired output Ethernet ports, and use the laptop in the wireless mode.  It should be all plug and play with NO setup required UNLESS you want to add security for the Wireless. (Highly Recommended) Then run the setup CD that comes with the router and set a WEP/WPA security key.  Put the key into the Wireless network setting of the laptop.

    You have a home network.

  2. Check out the link below for a good general guide to setting up a wireless network.  If you are interested in only connecting the Dell and Toshiba together, but not connecting to the Internet then you really don't need a router.  You can buy a wireless card for the Dell and set up a special kind of wireless network called an ad hoc network.  Keep in mind that it is not secure and performance may suffer depending on the size of your house.  On the other hand it's a good "poor man's" solution.  There's a lot more to it, so you're going to have to do some research, but luckily the Web has lots of good info.

  3. You need to buy a wireless router.
