How do I setup An Ethernet (Cable) Connection on my Lenovo T61 windows vista 64-bit Laptop? PLEASE help!?

So many things about networks! I just wanna plug in the cable and get some internet!

Step 1:

Plug in the cable and reboot the computer in that order. If this doesn't work, go to step 2.

Step 2:

Unplug the Ethernet cable from the computer, turn off the computer, turn off the router then the modem (leave off for 30 seconds), then turn on the modem then turn the router on then turn the computer on and once they're all on plug in the Ethernet again.
