How do I setup a group where only 5 of us can read e-mails that 100's of people send to the group?

this is quite tricky. the reply To default can be set up for Group Owner, however nothing will go to the groups archives.

even then, a person has the choice of sending it to the group anyway.

I really do not think that if you have any group of 100's posting, that you can limit those who read those posts to only 5. and you can not prevent any of most members from going tothe web to read, either.

I'm not sure why I'd ever post to a group that doesn't let me read posts.

Try setting all members to no-mail status on the member list pages.  But without getting posts they'll forget they're on the list.
