Question:

How do I ship an appliance?

I have a nearly new electric clothes dryer that I brought with me when I moved to California. I can't use it because all the hook-ups here are for gas clothes dryers. I want to give my electric dryer to my son who lives in Iowa but I have no idea how to go about shipping an appliance from California to Iowa. It's a $900 appliance so I don't mind spending some money to ship it. I just don't know how or where to go to do it.

  1. You'll have to ship it by freight because of the size.  Get started by contacting UPS to get rates.  Remember, with freight, distance & weight count; the heavier it is & the farther away you ship it, the more it costs.

However I suggest that you sell it where you live and send him the money instead and let him buy his own dryer locally.  Lots easier all around.

Anyhow, here's a link to UPS page for freight shipments that are "less than a truckload [LTL]"

    http://www.ltl.upsfreight.com/shipping/p...

Fill out the blanks and you can check the rate.  They ask for originating and receiving ZIPs, weight, etc.

  2. weight and bulk it's going to cost you ,might i suggest you sell it locally and buy your son a new one where he lives? go to ups.com they will give you costs ,i would imagine  you will need to crate it and wrap it up.also the mail usp.com  or fed ex ,all will give you information,i think the cost will make this an expensive present.don't buy him anything for christmas.............tom
