How do I shop for a good wet suit ?

I'd like to know if there are some good pointers ( hints) when I soon start shopping for a good wetsuit.

Specifically, it will be used for Surfing in the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest.

What should I avoid ? Who are the better manufactorers ? What should I not believe the shop owner is telling me ? What should feel right when I first try it on ??
