I need to show my college that my mom is a colorado resident so I can pay Colorado resident tuition which is only $77-$165 per credit hour but a non-resident pays $657-$800 per credit hour!

I am 17 but Colorado state law says that I cannot show full proof as a Colorado resident without a parent or guardian until I turn wait for it. . .

23!! Yes even if I turn 18 I still need my mother until I turn 23, by the time I turn 23 I would have already been working as Respiratory Therapist for 2 years.

I have so much proof that shows I have physically lived in Colorado for 4 years (that's how long I lived here) I have, transcripts from High School and College to a Colorado Driver's License to Auto Ownership to license plates to power utility receipts and rent manifests. So can my mom but the only reason she isn't considered as a Colorado resident is because she has a New Mexico license that doesn't expire until 2012.

But she doesn't drive anymore she has my grandmother or myself drive her so should I just say she doesn't have one? Or what should I do?

  1. The normal suggestion would be income tax stmts from CO or utility bills.  But since you mention the driver's license issue..most states have a State ID card you get at the DMV/BMV since you said she doesn't drive, could she turn in her NM license and get a CO state id?

Another option that I would try since you apparently have lots of documentation (but the fact that you were in school doesn't necessarily help since you were/are a minor) ... I would request a hearing/ supervisor review meeting.

  2. Does your mother have a job?  Submit her state tax returns showing she's paid Colorado state income tax.  She also may want to think about getting a Colorado drivers license as well since she lives there.

Added: You're 17, your mom's not.  Getting a license in a different state when you already have a valid one from any state does not require the same hoops as getting a permit and first license.

  3. You make copies of any utilities, tax, SSI bills, bank account statements etc. she has as well as a copy of a photo ID with address.

  4. Tax records should do it.  Show that she has paid taxes.

  5. your mom can show property tax bill,  voter registraton card,   etc.

  6. In the eyes of the law, residence is generally determined by physical presence, and intent to stay.
