  1. It is a fairly simple process to winterize your sprinkler system.

The basic steps are as follows:

    *Turn off water supply

*Blow out lines to all zones

*Close all valves and openings to system to prevent    bugs/insects from entering to nest

To blow out lines you need to connect your air compressor to the main water line of the sprinkler system.  The size of the compressor will determine how long it will take you to blow out each zone.  I have done it with a compressor that had a 12 gallon tank but would recommend one of at least 20 gallons.

The pressure needs to be limited to about 40 psi which is close to most water supply line pressure.  Too much pressure could cause failure of fittings or sprinkler heads.

Once the system is free of water it can be closed up for the winter.  No anti-freeze is needed.  Any small amounts of water that might remain in the lines will not cause any harm as they are too small to do any damage.

I always run through the entire system... zone by zone twice.  This ensures that there has not been any water holding in a low spot and causing a potential problem from freezing.

Set your timer for each zone to cycle about 3 to 4 minutes each.  Watch as the system cycles and you will see... first the water being blown out... then only mist... then nothing.

    Disconnect the compressor

    Close the valve

    Wait until spring

    GOOD LUCK!!!
