How do I soften linen fabric?

I just bought some lovely linen material for a dress, but it's a little stiff and scratchy. I've felt really nice, buttery soft linen before - how can I get that effect at home?

  2. The linen you have purchased has most likely been starched.  Just washing it will wash out the starch and make it softer.  Linen always wears softer over time as well.
