How do I sort data in a text file?

I have some data that I would like to put in ascending order. I know I can do it with Microsoft Excel but I don't have that. Does anyone know a way I can do it? Or could someone please do it for me?

  2. 1. make a text file, and put the data in, name the file to data.txt

    2. Use

    sort data.txt>sorted.txt

    at the command prompt

    Then you will have the data sorted in sorted.txt , if you need something compatible with MS Excel, you can download openoffice at http://www.openoffice.org, the Calc in it is the spreadsheet programme that works like excel.
