How do I speed up file transfers over my network?

I just set up a home network yesterday between my two computers and I want to transfer a few big files from one computer to the other. I tried it before but it was only transferring at 10 Mb\s. How do I increase this speed to 100 Mb\s or more to speed up file transfers?

  1. The transfers speed depending on a lot of things.First, the hardware of the two computers. For example, the cards of the two computers. If they support much more. The speed will be limited.Secondly, the network. To speedup the transfer, you'd better upgrade the network.Or you can try System Speedup Wizard.I am not sure whether it can give you a hand.

  2. Im asuming your going through a router thats slowing the rate down

    Heres a sugestion

make a direct network conection by pluging in a crossover cable between the two computers, when you go this route the rate is usualy based on the cord your usuing, some can transfer files a few gb per second "IF YOUR COMPUTER allows it"... only one of mine allows it the other is a pain.. heh

Theirs also programs out their that can change the speed but i dont recomend them as some really mess up transfer rates and turn them into yoyos

  3. A 100Mbit/s fast ethernet network can transfer around 10 MBytes/s (notice the bits and bytes). if you want to go any faster then upgrade to a gigabit network (routers + switches + NICs + cables).

Even with a direct connection between the 2 computers, you are unlikely to exceed the 10 MBytes/s barrier as the hardware just doesnt support it.

  4. The transfer is as fast as the slowest part of the link, so you need 10/100 cards in both computers and a 10/100 router or switch.  Then, the 100mbps is the burst speed, not the sustained thruput - each packet goes at 100mbps, but the file transfer could be much slower, depending on a lot of things.

Try sneakernet, it's the oldest network technology.  Copy the files to a flash drive, use your sneakers to move the flash drive to the other computer (IOW walk) and copy the files from the flash drive.
