  1. I would start with studying economics, as it  is the motivation behind people's actions. Many people are conservationist who do not buy into the global warming stuff. We conserve our resources because it is the right thing to do, and it saves us money. Doing it to "Save the Earth" is a fad that will go away once the temp naturally changes. Effect people in a more permanent manner by focusing on helping them. If you do this, you will also help conserve our resources.

You could show people that buying a high efficiency washer can save them money (I did the calculations and for me, it pays off in about 4 years). You could also challenge the members to see who can be the best hyper-miler (driving to get the best gas mileage without negatively effecting other drivers). I personally do a lot of coasting in neutral and have drastically increased my mileage. Sort of ironic that I did this as a kid because I had no money. Now I do it to save on the gas bill because I dislike paying high prices.

To be fair, I would also look at some supposed energy saving tips that do not work. Those stupid light bulbs which cost 6 times the amount and save so little as to almost never be worth the cost.

  2. Did you mean starting up a cult?

  3. im a college student too, i had this friend who was really into the environment. she started out by telling us interesting facts bout the environment that really mattered to us, like how polystyrene use in the canteens were hazardous to the environment AND to our health. she also gave us some cool ideas on reusing and recycling- she reuses every single scrap of paper. show people how simple it is to recycle and reuse. conduct movie shows related to the environment. most importantly lead by example. this friend actually practices what she preaches and that got us all wowed  and into the environment cause. now in university she has her own environmental club. don't worry, follow your heart and the rest will come to you. get started!

  4. Make it real...by which I mean don't try to shove all that global warming c**p down everyones throat.  Yes its warming...and 20 years ago it was cooling....Do research before trying to blog out loud

  5. meetup.com is a great place to collect people

  6. First of all you must become a role model by exhibiting a practical solution for our global energy problem. Once it is recognised as a solution, then others who see it will believe and would like to know how it is done and then a club will automatically start.   Have a look at the practical solution that has been recognised and honored by the World Bank with a certificate and a knowledge grant:

Solar energy is green energy, clean energy and it is freely available during certain hours of the day and during certain months of the year. It all depends upon how we make use of this infinite energy.

Example: many of us misuse electricity during day time for LIGHTING the interiors of our homes even though free, bright and clean solar energy is available just across our windows and doors, when the sun is shining. Switching on the bulbs during day time is a criminal waste of costly electricity. The bulbs also contribute CO2 and global warming.

Example of savings of electricity that can be effected - one bulb/tube light of 40 volts burnt for 6 hours during day time (whether at home or offices or business complexes), consumes about 8 units of electricity in a month. If this ONE bulb can be switched off during day time, by 100,000 people, we can save 800,000 units of electricity in a month and in six months, when the sun shine is available, we can save 4,800,000 electricity units.

Supposing more than one bulb is switched off, use the above formula to calculate the savings and also how many thousands of tons of CO2 emission can be saved. That is the power of volume.

I am not asking you to live in darkness. Many of us need that one burning bulb to keep our interiors bright because we would have kept our doors and windows shut for various reasons like security, wind, dust etc., but still we need that burning bulb for reading etc.

I have a simple solution for giving you free energy for lighting your interiors. I am not talking about energy that is required for kinetic purpose like running a fan, oven, geyser etc., I am talking about that simple light that brightens the interior of your home. My following solution does not involve any nano technology or billion dollar investment. Anybody can do it with a little innovative mind.

SO, LET US "BRING HOME THE SUNSHINE AND LIVE IN A BRIGHTER WORLD". How?

When the sun is shining outside your windows, locate the spot where maximum hours of sunshine will be available. Take a plastic chair, a pillow, a few pieces of waste thermostat or cardboard and a mirror measuring 1' X 2'; open one window, keep the chair in the sunshine, pillow on it and the mirror on the pillow. Keep adjusting the angle of the mirror till such time that the deflected sun shine gets inside your home and hits the white ceiling and fine tune the same by keeping small pieces of card board behind the mirror to maintain that angle. LO, AND BEHOLD, YOUR ROOM IS BEAUTIFULLY LIT UP WITH NATURAL LIGHT FROM THE CEILING - FREE FOR YOU.

This is a practical solution for a global problem and everybody can become innovators for helping the world reduce global warming and to get free lighting with the help of infinite solar energy by switching off as many bulbs as possible. Think of the benefits that would accrue by way of savings in terms of investment to generate that many MW of electricity, how much of fossil fuel, coal or water that would be used for generating that much of electricity, investment on machineries, transmission cost, labor, etc. etc. and also how much of CO2 can be reduced, they have nth value.

Please publish this simple solution or send it to as many people as possible.

This solution has been awarded a Certificate of Honor and a knowledge grant by the world bank - project U-SEE # 585 of IDM 2007 competition. Browse,

  7. It is a great idea to start a club to promote environmental issues among fellow students.

Show some films on clean and green environment.

Organise some lectures and talks by some experts on various environmental issues.

Organise project work to perform something which mitigates global warming and reduces pollution.

Essay competition, debate etc., can be organized.

Visit to various areas of your city or locality in view to promote and share green issues with local citizens.

Weekend visit to industrial areas to learn about industrial pollution, the equipments used by various industries to check pollution and other issues.

Collect various websites which deals with environmental problems and provide various information on developments etc., and distributes among members for viewing.

I have a blog dealing with environmental issues, you may please refer for information:  http://www.environmentengineering.blogsp...

  8. Your campus should have a Student Services (or whatever department oversees clubs) person there to help you through all of this and give you advice. Start with them.  They should walk you through getting a faculty advisor and club rush to start with.  Your advisor can help you with topics. One or the other should also help you get "face time" in at least some related classes where members can go in and make a brief new club announcement. If you miss any classes, mae a flyer for the faculty member to read in class.
