How do I start breeding my own guppies?

I want to start breeding my own guppies but I don't exactly know how to start off. What are all the things I need to start breeding?

You need to make sure your nitrite, nitrate and ammonia levels are all correct. You should check your pH is suitable for breeding guppies.

You should keep 2-3 females to every male guppy so that the males don't over power the females.

Buy a floating hatchery ready for when your females get pregnant.

Breeding is the easy part.  The tricky part is creating the strain you want and not losing that strain by too much cross-breeding or inbreeding.  Guppies multiply like crazy so you will need a lot of tanks, a lot of friends willing to adopt your leftover fry, or the cold nerve it takes to euthanize hundreds of "mutt" fish.

It sounds cold-blooded, but that's what it takes to raise fish with only the traits you desire.

Depends on how deep into this you want to get?

If you simply want to breed a few fish then I would start with 2, 10 gallon tanks complete with filter systems and heaters.

The correct male to female ratio is 2 females to every male.   I would think to start with 4 females and 2 males would do just fine.  The gestation period of the guppy is 22 to 26 days.  

After birth remove the adults and put them in the second tank.  Care for the fry as you would the adults.    Then 22 to 26 days later guess what?  you have another birthing of guppies.  Seperate them from the adults.  It wont be long and you will have virtually hundreds of guppies.

You may also want to do this in a larger scale.  Like a 30 or 55 gallon tank. In that case put lots of plants in the tank to give the fry lots of hiding places.  That will keep them safe and you will get a large survival rate.   They really only need adaquate hiding places to survive.
