I play the piano, but I'm getting bored of it -_- so I want to learn guitar...how do I go about doing this? How much should I spend on one? Is it worth it to get lessons or can I learn by myself? How much dedication will it take?

  1. Go to a local music store where they train people and sell instruments like where you got your piano. They will teach you the basics.

  2. Buy a not so expensive guitar to begin with, if you have access to lessons, or have someone close to you to teach you, it's the best way you can start. If you don't have anyone to teach you, you should go to a guitar store and ask the clerk which books are best for beginners, preferably, buy one that has all levels in one, so that you don't have to go and find the intermediate version later on, and get lost. Also, I recommend watching your favorite guitarist play, and som of the pros too, like Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, you can chech them out at youtube. Don't get discouraged, it takes a lot of patience, but if you practice right, you will get it in a few months. Best of luck.

  3. First, you need to get yourself your own guitar. Its your choice of what type of guitar to get ( electric or acoustic ) . A lot of people say that acoustic is the best to start with, but electric is actually a lot easier. I started with an electric, and I did fine. Dont buy anything too expensive at first in case you dont like it, but dont buy a piece of junk either. Go to a music shop where they know what they are doing. Dont go to Wal-Mart  or Sears or anything. Their guitars are mostly complete c**p. Whether or not to get lessons is completely up to you. Either way, it will take a lot of practice. Try to practice every day.

  4. Don't take lessons. Its a waste of money. All you gotta do is buy a guitar (I started with an electric, but acoustic will do. If you buy an electric, you might also want to buy a practice amp). After you buy a guitar, learn how to read tabs. Tabs are like sheet music. Once you can read tabs, start learning your favorite songs. If you're playing electric, I suggest learnin' some Nirvana songs (easy to memorize, and have simple solos).

    Hope this helps!

  5. as a beginner, you shouldn't spend too much on a guitar (i'm talking about acoustic guitars) so maybe $200 tops. yamaha makes good basic ones. i learned by myself and with the help of the internet (ultimate-guitar.com) and some guitar books. at first, your fingers are gonna hurt because youre pressing down on the strings, but after like a week it won't hurt as much .. so yeah it takes some dedication. but overall it's pretty easy to get the basics down, i think piano is harder to learn.

  6. If you like the sound of classical guitar, then check your local community college for courses.  If you prefer steel acoustic, check the college anyway, the instructor may allow you to play on it.  If you prefer electric, well, find a private instructor.  College courses are cheaper of course.  I would definitely get instruction, at least in the beginning, otherwise you may fall into some bad habits that will slow down your learning.

How much you spend on a guitar is a balance between what sounds good to you and how long you hope to be able to use the guitar, vs. how much you're willing to spend if you don't keep playing.  My first was a fender solid spruce top steel acoustic for $350 and I still have it today.  My first classical I spent $550... and still have it today.  Really, it's just how much money you feel you need to spend to get the quality of sound you want.

Dedication? Lots.  Depends on what you want to do with it I guess.  Half an hour a day for the next year will get you great results.  Andre Segovia practiced 5 hours a day until the day he died.  The Assad brothers reportedly practice 8 hours a day.  Take your pick!  I can practice for 3 hours, but I love it.

  7. hi friend you can do that!! first, your fingers are gonna hurt because youre pressing down on the strings, but after like a week it won't hurt as much .. so yeah it takes some dedication. but overall it's pretty easy to get the basics down, i think piano is harder to learn.
