How do I start rally racing?

Question

I'm curious about rally racing, but don't really know a whole lot about it. What kind of car should I get if I want to get into rallying? Then, what kind of modifications need to be made? Who would I contact about competing after my car is ready? And, where can I take my car to practice? I live in Illinois, west of Chicago if that helps. Any information about books or websites that might help me would be greatly appreciated.

Subscribe to Grassroots Motorsports magazine. They have tons of info on entry level rally racing. NASA (National Auto Sport Association) and the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) both have different types of rally events to participate in.
