How do I start running if I have never ran before?

I am 33 years old a size 10 and I need to lose about 20lbs. Ever since having kids I just can't keep the extra weight off. I am dieting and fast walking 40 minutes a day 4-5 days a week. I am very interested in running but I have never ran before. I have tried jogging in intervals during my walking and I like how jogging makes me feel. What program should I use to start off running? Thanks!

  1. Sounds like you are well on your way!  Many beginning running programs start with intervals of running and walking.  I would continue what you are doing, and as the running sections get easier, extend the running times and decrease the walking times.  For specific programs, google "couch to 5K" or Jeff Galloway

Also, a little advice from a somewhat newbie:  Make sure you are not trying to run too fast!  You should be able to breathe comfortably (they say you should be able to hold a conversation).  If you can't, slow down.

If you haven't already, you should go to a good running store (not one of the chain sporting goods stores, but a specialty running store) to get fitted for shoes.  You will be much more comfortable and less likely to get injured if you do.

  2. you should start by seeing where you are. jog as far as you can without stopping and see where that takes you. then up the distance when you feel comfortable. listen to music or run with a friend to make it more fun. [are you looking to compete?? ]
