How do I start to sell foods that I make?

I am a really good cook and people always tell me I should sell some of the things I make. I make good candies and desserts, and all sorts of things. Is there a way where I can start to package and sell things locally? If they end up being a hit I wouldn't mind opening up my own place.

You have to check the local health department guidelines and  read the Department of Agriculture regulations.  The fiery-food site has some how-to information and the second site is for Michigan, but it will give you some more info.

NASFT.org is a organization that can put you in the right direction. "national association speciality food trade" This is a company that will either give you advice and  information.

If you dont want to make the food your self or if you have a recipe that is good you can give it to a co-packer that will make the food for you and put your name (company name) on the package.

If you want to make the food your self you will have to have your kitchen inspected by local health department. renting a business kitchen is also a good idea. You can sell your wares to specialty stores, restarants, on ebay(ive seen that done for candy) or your own website. I ideas are endless.



If you have a local store that is popular make arrangements to sale your wares there with some aggrement. i like the idea of starting your own direct mail campaign selling candy. think of wilburs chocolate(not sure if i have that spelled right) they sell through a direct marketing so does sarris candy.

You can also sell for christmas; cookies, hot chocolate, fruit cakes, speciality cakes.

there is a local guy who makes and packages his own hot chocolate, cappachino and tea. he sells through stores and local craft shows.

There is a lady in california who makes wedding cakes and now owns her own store.

check on  Entrepreneur.com they have a sleu of idea on there related to food.

Food for sale is usually governed by health department rules.  Call your local one.
