How do I start-up insurance sales company? Do I need to go through farmers etc?

In my opinion, the best place to start is with a company with "captive" agents.  This type of company contracts agents to sell their products and only their products.  The benefit of this to a beginning agent is that these companies often pay a starting salary to to new agents (and you don't have to worry about the hassle of starting your own agency).  This helps for people learning the industry and building a book  of business.  Most "captive" companies allow new agents to convert after a certain amount of time when your commissions start to become more than the starting salary. Two companies that I have heard of with great training programs a Country Financial and Nationwide Insurance.  Either way, it's best to contact some companies to find out their licensing requirements.  All companies will require some type of Insurance License (Auto and Home, Life and Health, or a combination).  Some companies will require certain financial licenses as well.

There are basically two types of insurance offices.

The first is one like State Farm that only offers their specific products.

The second is a multi-line insurer.  They will search to get you the lowest fees possible (to you) for a specific type of insurance.  If you are looking for auto insurance, they may  contact 5 or 6 companies and let yhou know which is the best for you.  

Both companies earn specific dollar amounts for specific types of insurance.

In order to start an insurance company, you MUST first be licensed by the state you live/work in.  Insurance licenses are pretty tough to get, depending on the type of insurance.The you must apply to the companie(s) and ask to offer their products.
