Hi I'm a 10th grader and I'm taking Biology as my 6th period class. It is the final class of the day for me and after all those other classes, laughing talking work, I can't seem to keep my eyes open and It's causing me to get a bad grade. Any ideas how to stay awake?

  1. This could actually be a very serious issue.  Narcolepsy in this country is way underdiagnosed and if it gets worse, you could lose years and years of your life before you figure it out and get help.  I started having sleep issues when I was only 16.  By the time I was 27, I was a zombie.  I could have slept 22 hours/day if I'd let myself.  At that time I started taking a tricyclic anti-depressant and BOOM, all of a sudden I was a different person.  I was AWAKE.  Interestingly, my wife is also narcoleptic.  She takes a more traditional medication for narcolepsy, Provigil (modafinil).

You should have a sleep study done as soon as possible.  If you really are narcoleptic, the problem is easily corrected.  Don't lose the next ten years of your life!  Most narcoleptics don't get diagnosed until they are in their 30's!

  2. write a story or pretend your paying attention

  3. Mid afternoon classes are always tough to stay awake in (especially if they're boring).  Try taking a lot of notes!  Write down everything your teacher says (in your own words, or in shorthand).  By taking a lot of notes, that will keep you focused on the lecture and will keep you awake.  You will also have excellent notes to study from!

Also try to do some reading on the lecture topic beforehand.  By knowing a little about the topic, the subject will be more interesting during the lectures (because they will make more sense and you will learn more).  Keep interested and keep busy!
