I have 2 squirls in my backyard and they eat the tomatoes of the plants just as they are ripening.

  1. I don't think the netting would stop a squirl from eating your tomatoes.

I'd use a box trap and relocate the squirl to park or the woods depending on where you live.

  2. some garden stores sell netting to protect planets from predators

  3. RPG

  4. I live in farm country where people have been farming for generations.

A squirrel can get through netting or wire. Heck they can get into my bird seed bin!  If you have only one or two plants, you will have to get very creative and see what works. Some put out aluminum foil pans, hanging on a rope around their garden, but you can bet that a squirrel will figure out that the pan can't hurt him and plunge right in. We've been told that moth balls will discourage them. As soon as the ground is wet though, your moth balls are gone. You can try a garden windmill, or a wind chime, but the best thing you can do is try to keep an eye on the fruit and get it off the vine. You might even try putting out some dried corn or an old pumpkin for the squirrels to eat. It might take their mind off your juicy tomatoes.

I've seen many squirrels doing olympic gymnastics to get to the food they want, so if worse comes to worst, sit back and enjoy the fun!
