Question:

How do I stop colours running?

We recently upgraded our washing machine to a melee combined washer/dryer from a much cheaper model. I have been washing everything on a cotton setting but the colours have been running even though I separate lights from darks. With our old washing machine we washed lights and darks together and never had a problem. I am guessing it might be something to do with the temperature I am washing at. Does anyone have some advice?

  1. I wash my colours on a  polyester setting - the water is not too hot.

I wash my whites all together, separate from the colours.

Never had any problem before with this method.

  2. Use cold water and add a cup of vinegar to the wash where you think a color may bleed.

  3. Well, we do our laudry by color. ex. Reds are washed in one load, whites are in one load, blues and greens are in one load OR we do greens seperate if we have enough.

    Whites include all whites.

Reds are purple, yellow, orange, red, pink.

    Blues are blue, black, grey.

    Greens are green, brown, tans.

    That way, colours never run!

    Good luck!

  4. Normally hot water makes colors run.  I wash everything in cold except whites or heavily soiled clothes.  I've also added a cup of vinegar or a cup of salt to new brightly colored clothes, it's suppose to "set" the colors.  It's always worked for me in the past....
