I've just started trail running and I'm doing it in a pair of asics kayanos, which I know aren't ideal but I've got some serious bruising under my toenails and I think I'm going to lose a couple. Is there anyway to A) stop them from bruising and B) stop the already bruised ones from falling off? Thanks alot

  1. You may need bigger shoes or you may be running up on your toes or a combination of both.  There is even a chance that your shoes are too big.  Let's look at each of these scenerios:

    1.  If your shoes are too tight, then your toe is being pressed up against the shoe and with each step, depending on your speed and form,  you are putting somewhere between 1.5 and 6x your body weight.

    2.  If you run up on your toes, then it is the same as number 1.  Make sure your ankles are at 90 degrees.  If you are running long distance try to run more flat footed or with little heel strike.  If you are a sprinter, then you should have a credit card distance between your heel and the ground.  Running on your toes or too much heel strike will cause injuries such as the bruising you see, shin splints, tendinitis, etc, etc due to the braking forces exhibited when running.

    3.  If your shoes are too big and your feet move within the shoe, then you will end up sliding your foot up and down within the shoe.  So now instead of the constant pressing on the toes, now you have a hammering effect.

Form or shoes are the 2 big items here.  You may need to go to a running store to have them fit you.  Don't get caught up in all that they try to sell you.  Next, have someone with knowledge look at your form.  This will typically not be the person that runs a lot including many athletic coaches out there.  I am talking about someone with a background in kinesiology.

    Good Luck!

  2. If they are bruised and you think they are going to fall off there in no way to save them.... and i think the answer is pretty obvious.... but sneakers that are made for trail running!!!!

  3. Get some shoes that fit properly.  They are worth the money.

  4. Yes

    No

Get some good trail shoes with a high roomy toe box.

  5. 1. It isn't bruising under your toenail. If your shoe is too large or to small, the friction and pressure of the your shoe against your toe causes the condition. The purplish gunk under your toenail is blood.

    2. If you get shoes that fit you perfectly, it won't happen again. Try to stay away from intensive training sessions. It will last a bout half a year.

    3. There's no way to stop toenails from falling off.

  6. wear 2 pairs of socks and buy new shoes and let a professional help you choose the right kind of shoes for you. put bandaids on your toes and then put socks over the bandaids and that will keep them on.

  7. Well if you dont have the right shoes, then there isnt a whole lot you can do to stop them from bruising.  Get fitted for the right type of shoes.  THere are a lot of running stores out there that will let you try out the shoes for 30-60 days and if you dont like them then you can exchange them.  And if they are going to fall off they are going to fall off.  It happens to almost all distance runners at some point.

  8. Keep them trimmed short. and maybe put clear polish over them.

  9. There  is  a  vitamin  you  can  buy  for  that  .Ask  a  pharmacist

  10. If your toenails are falling off, you have a fungus and that is common for runners.

trust me, there is no way to get rid of it without a prescription med.  Once a fungus starts on one toe, it has the ability to spread to the other toes.

Again, it wont go away - it only gets worse if untreated.  And it is easy to treat if you seek treatment soon
