How do I stop mildew from growing on the sheets?

I have a problem with my 8 month old daughters bedding.

She is sleeping in a cot and I have to change her sheets every two to three days due to mildew. There doesnt appear to be any trace on the mattress but the woolrest and the mattress protector both have black spots around where her head is. After two to three days it starts to come through the sheets. We still wrap her when we put her down and I also use a pillow too so that gives me another barrier between her and the sheets, the mattress protector and the woolly sheep skin. She is starting to cough alot now during the night specially on cold ones. Is there anything I can do or am I best to just ditch the mattress, woolrest, protector, sheets and pillow for the sake of my wee girls health. I am so reluctant cos it is all only 8 months old....

  1. Git rid of everything you have found the mold on.  Be thankful that it is only the mattress.  I would also wipe down the whole room including all furniture with TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) to prevent future growth.  I would also run a dehumidifier in the room as much as possible.  There must be a moisture issue.

  2. You desperately need to invest in a dehumidifier - it will remove the humidity (water) out of the air and eventually eliminate the mildew.  Makes your house a LOT healthier, too!

  3. Ditch it... Mold can cause many health problems and for an 8 month old it is even harder. Get rid of it.

  4. Get rid of everything. MOLD is deadly, especially for babies! There is a moisture problem, get a dehumidifier and run it constantly.

  5. buy a dehumidifier better yet buy awhole new mattress.Bad for any one sleeping on it Health problems just waiting to happen.

  6. Toss them all out. it means that the mold is deep down in the mattress and she is breathing the spores every time she moves and sends them up into the air to scatter around the house. Maybe check some garage sales for a bed better suited to her and find a nice cheep twin mattress at a store to go with it. I found a person giving away a set of twin bunk beds once and I jumped right on that. You need to get her a new mattress too as the used ones have who knows what living in them and have had who knows what happen on them. Better safe than sorry.
